Commercial Refrigeration
Commercial Refrigeration Jobs

You service the equipment that stops a store from throwing out its inventory: walk-in coolers, reach-in cases, condensing units, and full rack systems in grocery, restaurants, c-stores, and distribution centers. Most postings want EPA 608 Universal and hands-on time with commercial brands. Pay runs above general HVAC service work because rack and low-temp calls are harder to staff. See the 2026 commercial refrigeration pay guide for what those numbers look like by experience level.

Getting Hired

What Employers Screen For

01
EPA 608 Universal

Federal law to handle refrigerant, and the first thing a recruiter checks. Start with the EPA 608 certification guide if you don't hold it yet.

02
Brand Familiarity

Name the equipment you've worked on. Hussmann, Copeland, Heatcraft, Danfoss controls carry more weight than years alone.

03
Clean Driving Record

Service roles come with a company vehicle. Insurance eligibility filters more applicants than skill does.

04
On-Call Willingness

Nights and weekends are where the overtime lives, and they'll ask before they extend an offer.

Questions

Common Questions

Do I need experience to get a commercial refrigeration job?

Not for helper and apprentice roles, which pair you with a lead tech and pay while you learn. National contractors and larger shops hire off attitude and a clean record, then train. Here's how to get hired with no experience.

Is commercial refrigeration different from HVAC?

Same cycle, different stakes. Refrigeration runs lower temps, tighter tolerances, and a failed call costs a store its product, which is why the pay premium exists.

Do I need a state license on top of EPA 608?

Depends where you work. Some states require an HVAC/refrigeration contractor or journeyman license, some license at the city or county level, and some don't license at all. Check refrigeration license requirements by state.
