Chiller Technician Jobs
Chiller Technician Jobs

Chiller work sits at the top end of the trade because the equipment is large-tonnage and the downtime is expensive. You are servicing centrifugal, screw, and reciprocating machines in data centers, hospitals, universities, and high-rise mechanical rooms. Employers screen for hands-on time on Trane, Carrier, York, or Daikin Applied units plus controls and commissioning experience, and they pay for it, as the highest-paying refrigeration jobs ranking shows.

Where the work is

Settings That Hire Chiller Techs

Data CentersSite-based

Redundant chiller plants with zero tolerance for downtime; heavy on rounds, logs, and controls.

HospitalsSite-based

24/7 load, strict change control, and older machines kept running well past nameplate life.

Universities & CampusesCentral plant

Central plants and chilled water loops, often union shops with steady schedules.

OEM & Contract ServiceTravel

Factory or contractor routes covering many buildings, with startups and contract assignments on the road.

What employers screen for

Getting Hired On Chillers

01
EPA 608 Universal

Federal law to handle refrigerants, and the first line most chiller postings check. Start with the EPA 608 certification guide.

02
Machine hours by type

Say centrifugal, screw, or recip, and name the manufacturer. "HVAC experience" reads as no chiller experience.

03
Controls and commissioning

Reading a BAS trend and proving a startup separates a chiller tech from a filter changer.

04
A route in from service work

Most techs cross over from rack or general service; the how to become a commercial refrigeration technician guide maps the path.

Questions

Chiller Tech FAQ

Do chiller technicians make more than general refrigeration techs?

Generally yes. Large-tonnage equipment, critical facilities, and commissioning work push chiller roles toward the top of the pay range for the trade.

What certification do I need for chiller work?

EPA Section 608 is federally required to handle refrigerants, and most employers want the Universal card. Any state or local HVAC license is separate and depends on where you work.

Is chiller work travel-heavy or site-based?

Both exist. OEM and contract service roles travel between accounts, while data centers, hospitals, and campuses staff techs at one plant full time.
