Service Route Role

Refrigeration Service Technician Jobs

You run a service route or cover assigned facilities, diagnosing and repairing commercial and light industrial refrigeration on your own. Most days mean a company vehicle, a book of accounts, and troubleshooting calls without a supervisor over your shoulder.

Pay is almost always hourly with overtime, and many of these roles carry an on-call rotation; the overtime and on-call pay guide breaks down how that adds up. To sort the routes that actually pay, read how to find jobs that pay well.

What gets you hired

What Employers Expect

EPA 608 CertificationRequired

Federal law before you touch refrigerant; the EPA 608 guide covers which core to take.

Electrical DiagnosticsCore Skill

Reading controls, tracing faults, and fixing them solo is the daily test on a route.

Refrigerant HandlingCore Skill

Hands-on experience with common commercial refrigerants and charge, not just book knowledge.

Independent Field WorkExpectation

Managing your own calls and accounts without close supervision is the job, not a bonus.

Common questions

Service Tech FAQ

Is this role hourly or salaried?

Service tech positions are typically hourly with overtime, and many include an on-call rotation where after-hours calls stack additional pay on top of your base rate.

Do I need EPA 608 to get hired?

Yes. EPA 608 is federally required to handle refrigerants, so employers treat it as a baseline; the electrical and mechanical diagnostic ability is what separates candidates from there.

Do these jobs come with a company vehicle?

Most do. Service roles usually assign a company van plus a book of accounts, since you're driving between customer sites and running your own route day to day.
