Buy the digital manifold first if you are already running solo calls. Buy probes first if your company supplies manifolds and you want faster diagnostics across multiple cases or split systems. Not optional when you open a charged circuit. This is where cheap equipment wastes the most time. A slow machine turns a compressor swap into a long day on systems with large receivers, long piping, or contaminated refrigerant. Look for fast liquid and vapor recovery, field-rebuildable parts, and a weight low enough that you actually carry it.
Use the company-owned machine. Stay EPA-compliant without buying too early.

Do not buy a bargain machine as your primary. Recovery speed affects labor hours, customer downtime, and whether the store manager sees you as prepared.
This is where tool choice directly affects profit. Small leaks on a rack, walk-in evaporator, prep table, or ice machine become repeat calls when you rely on bubbles and oil stains. Infrared detectors cost more than heated diode tools, but sensor life is longer and they handle dirty equipment rooms better.

A pump does not pull harder because of the sticker on the side. Evacuation speed comes from pump condition, hose size, core removal, oil quality, system moisture, restrictions, and where you measure microns. Most service techs want a two-stage pump in the 6 to 10 CFM range with large-diameter hoses, core removal tools, clean oil, and a standalone micron gauge.
